KEWI Charts Bold Future, Ushers in New Financial Year with Landmark Staff Promotions
KEWI has implemented a wide range of promotion of its staff across all cadres. In an announcement made during the annual staff meeting held to mark the start of the Financial Year 2026/2027, the Institute recognized and elevated employees across all job categories in what was described as an unprecedented milestone in its history.
The announcement was made during the General Staff Meeting held on Tuesday, 28th July 2026, at the Water Resources Centre (WRC) Auditorium, where staff from all four Kenya Water Institute (KEWI) campuses joined members of the Governing Council and Management to celebrate achievements, reflect on progress and align the Institution towards its strategic priorities for the new financial year.
The meeting was presided over by Governing Council Chairperson Hon. Patrick Musili Mbangula, MBS, alongside Council Members Mr. Solomon Maritim, Mr. Wilson Kipkazi and Ms. Jane Muthoni, with Management led by Director/CEO Dr. Leiro Letangule, EBS.
One of the defining moments of the meeting was the announcement and recognition of the staff promotions. Dr. Letangule described the promotions as a demonstration of the Institute's appreciation for the dedication, professionalism and excellence consistently exhibited by its workforce.
"These promotions are not just about new titles or enhanced salaries; they are recognition of merit, performance, integrity and the value you bring to this Institution," Dr. Letangule said. "This is both an achievement and a responsibility. I challenge you to now work extra hard in recognition of this milestone to take this institution to higher levels."
The Director also announced encouraging news for long-serving contract employees, revealing that many would transition to Permanent and Pensionable terms following approval by the Governing Council. He noted that the decision reflects KEWI's commitment to recognizing dedication, retaining talent and building a stronger workforce capable of driving the Institute's long-term growth.
Reflecting on the beginning of the 2026/2027 Financial Year, Dr. Letangule highlighted the Institute's remarkable progress despite an increasingly dynamic operating environment.
"As we mark the beginning of the 2026/2027 Financial Year, I wish to take a moment to reflect on our remarkable journey over the last few years as we strategize and focus ahead. We have made significant strides in fulfilling our core mandate amid evolving national priorities, technological shifts and global environmental challenges," he said.
He outlined key milestones achieved by the Institute, including the implementation of new human resource instruments, expansion of academic programmes, modernization of infrastructure, digital transformation, strengthened stakeholder partnerships, growth in research and enhanced institutional visibility. He further emphasized KEWI's continued investment in staff through local and international capacity-building opportunities, recognizing that a skilled workforce remains the foundation of the Institute's success.
Looking ahead, the Director called on staff to embrace a culture anchored on discipline, accountability, professionalism and excellence.
"I wish to reaffirm three pillars that are essential to our collective success: Discipline, Hard work and Performance focus. These values are not just ideals, but they are actionable commitments that shape our culture and determine our impact," he emphasized.
In his remarks, Governing Council Chairperson Hon. Patrick Musili Mbangula, MBS, commended staff for their resilience and unwavering commitment to advancing the Institute's mandate. He congratulated those who had earned promotions, reminding them that career progression carries greater responsibility and higher expectations. He also challenged all staff to remain focused on increasing long-term student enrolment, expanding participation in short courses and working collectively to strengthen KEWI's position as the country's premier institution for water education and training.
